Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment by adding new attachments. They can also boost its stats base or add additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.
Items that have weak bases, such as rings can be upgraded to more robust bases. Items with strong bases, such as eth Titans have little changes in their stats.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components are items that can be used to upgrade trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, giving an added bonus or effect when the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, or found as loot gathered by enemies or gotten from chests or missions. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain point before they are upgraded.
To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player must select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats and the necessary component or materials.
There are three kinds of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which comprise gems, can be placed in any type of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment are similar to jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be used in any other kind of equipment. Suffix upgrades that can be put in gathering tools, will add their name to the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding the word Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will make it a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If an individual upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces glyphs with another glyph the previous one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will damage it, except for inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from previous versions. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item can be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, however the materials required for upgrades do not. If an item doesn't reach its maximum level, the NPC offers players the option to transfer it to another character and then re-infuse it with a different set or upgrades. The process can take as long as two hours and costs the same amount of materials, though it will result in a lower chance of success.

Rerolling
